North Korea’s military fires missiles again. Pyongyang had previously warned the United States. Washington wants the UN Security Council to condemn the recent series of North Korean missile tests.
Widely isolated North Korea has continued testing potentially nuclear-capable missiles. On Friday afternoon (local time), the launch of two short-range ballistic missiles in the region around the North Korean capital Pyongyang was recorded, said the General Staff of the armed forces in South Korea. They flew east towards the open sea – one 250, the other about 350 kilometers away.
South Korea’s military accused the neighboring country of renewed provocation. UN resolutions ban North Korea, which has already conducted multiple nuclear tests, from testing ballistic missiles of any range. Depending on the design, these can be equipped with a nuclear warhead. Japan protested the latest missile test through its embassy in Beijing.
Prior to the missile launches, North Korea had criticized the US for trying to get the UN Security Council to issue a so-called Presidential Statement condemning North Korea’s recent tests of missiles, including an ICBM, in November. According to state media, the Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang warned that such a “stupid attempt” would have consequences. The ministry accused the United States of disregarding North Korea’s sovereignty. As reported by South Korean broadcasters, the United States had apparently distributed a draft of the declaration among the members of the highest UN body.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased noticeably this year. North Korea has significantly increased the scope and pace of its missile tests in recent months. According to the South Korean military, the country tested two medium-range missiles last Sunday. North Korea later spoke of a test to develop a military reconnaissance satellite.
The US and its ally South Korea resumed their joint military exercises in full this year, which are primarily intended to deter North Korea. On Tuesday, the air forces of both countries held an exercise near the peninsula. North Korea regularly accuses Washington of preparing an attack through its exercises in South Korea. This is denied by Seoul and Washington.
