On Tuesday the Greens and the Union met for the first exploratory talks. Both parties emphasized that the conversation was constructive and factual. The Greens are now withdrawing again for deliberations.
The Union and the Greens started their exploratory talks on Tuesday to explore possibilities for government cooperation. At the press conference that followed, both sides emphasized that the conversation had been very constructive and objective. “The conversations were good,” said CDU boss Armin Laschet and at the same time admitted: “Opposites were also revealed.” But these are surmountable. The chairmen of the CDU and CSU have also expressed the hope of a continuation.
The Greens chairwoman Annalena Baerbock emphasized that both parties stand together on the ecological transformation and modernization of Germany. The co-chairman Robert Habeck announced that after the talks with the Union they would first sit down with their own party. Further talks with the FDP are planned for Wednesday to discuss the best partner for the new government coalition.
The meeting marks the end of the first bilateral rounds of talks between the parties that are eligible for the formation of a government. The Greens took part with their ten-man negotiating team, the CDU was also represented by ten and the CSU by five negotiators.
Previously there had already been one-to-one talks between the Union, SPD, Greens and FDP in various other constellations. SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil wants to hold three-way talks with the Greens and the FDP soon after the separate explorations. The Greens are also aiming for a quick start of three-way explorations. Despite their preference for a traffic light coalition with the SPD and FDP, they also do not rule out a Jamaica alliance led by the Union.
In the run-up to the meeting on Tuesday, the Greens were irritated by the fact that alleged content from the black and yellow exploratory discussion on Sunday had leaked out, although discretion had been agreed. For this reason, the FDP had previously also sharply criticized the Union side.
