Black-Blue, second edition: “There is a lot to talk about, especially with Corona”

Stelzer sees the main challenges in pushing back the pandemic, in securing the economic upswing and the labor market, and in achieving the climate goals. FPÖ boss LHStv. Manfred Haimbuchner has “a good feeling”, he said before the negotiations began.

The Corona issue could be tricky: “We are two different parties, we have different points of view here and there, but we want to come up with a common program,” said Stelzer. “But especially when it comes to dealing with the disease, pushing back the disease and increasing the vaccination rate, there are sure to be one or the other topic.” The mayor of Wels, Andreas Rabl, who is negotiating on the FPÖ side, also expects that there will be a lot to discuss about Corona. Haimbuchner, on the other hand, does not want to say too much about the pandemic and dismisses questions about possible discrepancies between ÖVP and FPÖ or the blue state and federal party as “continuation of a soap opera”. He mentions the financial budget or how things are going with the Upper Austria Plan as the negotiating topics. He doesn’t see any stumbling blocks, at most “challenges”.

How quickly it will go remains open. Stelzer referred to the constituent state parliament session on October 23, but in view of the “six difficult years” ahead, one does not want to sacrifice content to the rapid passage of time. “I would like us to come to a result quickly, but it will also be about the balance between speed and precision,” said the LH.

In the talks it should first go to “structural”, it said from the ÖVP. It is obvious that working groups are formed on topics. The negotiating teams of both parties will remain the same for the time being as in the exploration last week.

Stelzer is accompanied by his deputy Christine Haberlander, the state councilors Max Hiegelsberger and Markus Achleitner as well as by state manager Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and club chairman Christian Dörfel. The FPÖ starts negotiations with LH deputy Manfred Haimbuchner, state councilor Günther Steinkellner, club chairman Herwig Mahr, club director Ferdinand Watschinger, Wels mayor Andreas Rabl and Haimbuchner’s office manager Roland Dietrich.
