Raid in the Austrian Chancellery and in ÖVP headquarters

According to media reports, there has been a raid both in the Austrian Chancellery and in the party headquarters of the ÖVP. The closest environment of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz should also be affected.

According to media reports, the Austrian police searched offices at the headquarters of the ruling ÖVP party and in the Chancellery on Wednesday morning. ÖVP Vice General Secretary Gaby Schwarz confirmed the searches in the party headquarters, but without giving any details. As the newspaper “Die Presse” reported, the raid affected the closest environment of Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

Schwarz explained that the use of the police was about a “show effect”. The events associated with the allegations were up to five years ago. According to information from the “press”, investigators searched the workplaces of several Kurz employees in the Chancellery and the party headquarters.

The background is therefore a suspicion of corruption in connection with the publication of advertisements and opinion polls in the newspaper “Austria”. Kurz himself could also be involved, the report said.

Ibiza affair: investigation against Kurz because of possible false statements

Against Kurz, investigations are already underway on suspicion of false testimony before a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the so-called Ibiza affair. The Ibiza affair triggered a political earthquake in Austria in May 2019, leading to a break in the governing coalition between Kurz’s ÖVP and the right-wing populist FPÖ and early elections. The ÖVP has been ruling in a coalition with the Austrian Greens since January 2020.

The background was an unveiling video shot secretly in Ibiza, which shows how the then FPÖ boss and later Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache promised a supposed Russian oligarch niece in return for election campaign aid, state contracts before the 2017 parliamentary elections.
