Ruhr area: anti-terror operation – no poison found in garages either

In connection with the anti-terrorist operation against two brothers in Castrop-Rauxel, the investigators have now also examined two garages in a backyard. So far they have not encountered any toxic substances.

During the investigations into the alleged planning of an Islamist-motivated attack, no toxins were found during a search of garages in Castrop-Rauxel on Monday. “As a result, we didn’t find anything relevant to the evidence,” said a spokesman for the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office.

In the meantime, surrounding houses have been evacuated to rule out a possible hazard, said the spokesman. A package had been found that had to be examined first. So there was nothing dangerous about it.

Two brothers aged 32 and 25 were arrested in Castrop-Rauxel on Sunday night. Arrest warrants were issued for her on Sunday evening. The two Iranians are said to have tried to procure poison for an Islamist-motivated attack. According to the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office, however, the corresponding toxins cyanide and ricin were not found during a search of the 32-year-old’s apartment.

Dangerous substances suspected

On Monday, the garages near the 32-year-old’s apartment were searched. According to the spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, he is said not to have been a tenant, but is said to have had access to the garages. Among other things, the so-called Analytical Task Force of the fire brigade was deployed to ensure safe handling of potentially hazardous substances. A decontamination line was set up.
