A week after Brazil’s President Lula took office, a right-wing mob attacked the government district. The situation escalates, hundreds of rioters are arrested. The day after, there are still many unanswered questions.
Chaos reigned in Brasília on Sunday. Thousands of supporters of ousted President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the government district in the Brazilian capital to protest the allegedly stolen election. His successor, the newly sworn in President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, spoke of “unprecedented barbarism”.
The scenes were reminiscent of the storming of the Capitol in Washington two years ago: Wrapped in the yellow and green of the Brazilian flag, right-wing rioters devastated the center of power, set fires and attacked police officers. Hours later, security forces were able to bring the situation under control.
