Extremism: After anti-terror operation – no poison found

After the anti-terror operation in the Ruhr area, there is a first sigh of relief. Spicy is that one of the two suspects was not actually at large when he was arrested.

After the arrest of two Iranian brothers for allegedly planning an Islamist-motivated attack, investigators have still not found any poison during searches.

“Possible custody locations known to us have been checked. We currently have no information on other possible custody locations,” said a spokesman for the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office. Garages in Castrop-Rauxel were searched in the morning, but nothing relevant to the evidence was found.

The brothers, aged 32 and 25, remain in custody for allegedly attempting to obtain the poisons cyanide and ricin. The younger of the two was still serving a sentence for attempted murder at the time of his arrest.

During the search of the garages near the 32-year-old’s apartment, surrounding houses were evacuated to rule out any possible danger, the spokesman said. A package had been found that had to be examined first. So there was nothing dangerous about it. The 32-year-old is said not to have rented the garages, but had access to them.

The brothers were arrested in Castrop-Rauxel on Sunday night. Arrest warrants were issued for her on Sunday evening. The two Iranians are said to have tried to procure poison for an Islamist-motivated attack. However, the relevant toxins were not found when the 32-year-old’s apartment was searched.

Federal prosecutors have so far refrained from taking over the case

The Attorney General’s office did not answer how far the possible attack plans had progressed and what a possible target would have been, with reference to the ongoing investigations. The federal prosecutor responsible for terrorism investigations has so far refrained from taking over the case.

There had also been searches at the address of the 25-year-old brother. He was not at large at the time of his arrest: he had been sentenced to seven years in prison in 2019 for attempted murder, among other things. He was still in a rehabilitation center in Hagen, but was allowed to spend the night with family members because of a relaxation at the weekend, as the Dortmund public prosecutor announced. During the operation on Sunday night, he was in his brother’s apartment. The “Westfalen-Blatt” had previously reported on it.

Brother is a member of an Islamist terrorist group

The man had therefore thrown a large branch from a bridge onto Autobahn 45 at night in July 2018. He hit a car, the driver was injured by broken glass. In fact he was drunk.

Because of his addiction, the court ordered in 2019 that he be placed in a rehabilitation center after a year and a half in prison. According to the clinic, the man had made progress, said the spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office. However, an application was last made at the end of November that the accommodation had to last. Accommodation must be reviewed every six months.

As the dpa learned from security circles, it is suspected that the 32-year-old brother is a supporter of a Sunni Islamist terrorist group. He is said not to have acted on behalf of Iranian state authorities.

The brothers came to Germany in 2015

Union interior expert Alexander Throm criticized Germany’s dependence on foreign intelligence services. “This dependency represents a significant security risk, which becomes even greater with the restrictive attitude of the traffic light towards our own services,” he told the newspapers of the Funke media group with a view to the red-green-yellow federal government.

According to the spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, a US security agency had pointed out the 32-year-old. The brothers came to Germany in 2015. Before the hint from the USA, they should not have noticed the security authorities because of Islamist activities.

NRW Minister of the Interior Herbert Reul (CDU) criticized the hesitation of politicians in obtaining information online. He doesn’t understand why Germany is having such a hard time here and not using the existing opportunities, he said on ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin”.
