Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet has offered that a Jamaica alliance could be negotiated personally without him. The party should also reposition itself in terms of personnel – he wants to moderate this process.
Armin Laschet has offered that negotiations on a Jamaica alliance of the Greens, FDP and Union could take place without him personally. It is not about the person Armin Laschet and: “It will not fail because of people,” said the Union’s candidate for chancellor on Thursday evening in Berlin. If you want to go other ways, that’s possible, said Laschet in a somewhat claused manner. The Jamaica project is above everything and his party is fully committed to a possible such alliance and any negotiations on it: “The CDU’s offer is available until the last second of the formation of a government.”
Laschet also indicated a possible withdrawal as party chairman. Even there, however, he found no clear words and left room for interpretation. The personnel realignment in the Union must be pushed ahead and he wants to moderate this process, said Laschet. To this end, he wanted to propose a party congress to the party’s top committees after the historic election defeat. Laschet said he would make this proposal to the committees in the coming week. The personal realignment of the CDU – “from the chairman through the presidium to the federal executive committee” – should now be tackled quickly. His goal has always been to reconcile opposites.
You have to come to terms with the historical defeat in the federal election and possibly go “unconventional paths”, he said, without explaining exactly what he meant.
Armin Laschet: One-sided discussions were not necessary
Laschet expressed harsh criticism of the decision by the Greens and the FDP to initially only hold exploratory talks with the SPD. “Here a door was slammed without any need and a decision was made to hold one-way talks,” said Laschet. He wanted parallel talks. The FDP had categorically ruled out that.
In the run-up to the statement, an internal meeting of the Union had already revealed that Laschet would not necessarily want to negotiate a Jamaica alliance himself. It’s about the project and not the people, he said. Laschet said that the CDU needed a new start in all committees. He is ready to moderate this process.
