: Navalny complains about renewed solitary confinement – and illness

He is being held in a prison camp under particularly harsh prison conditions for alleged fraud. Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny complains about health problems and the lack of medication.

According to his own statements, Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who was imprisoned in a Russian penal camp, was again locked in a solitary cell and is suffering from health problems there.

The prison management had already ordered solitary confinement for a total of 15 days on December 31 – as punishment for washing his face a few minutes early in the morning, Navalny had his team communicated on Instagram. According to the information, this is the tenth multi-day solitary confinement since he was transferred to penal colony 6 in Melekhovo, about 260 kilometers northeast of Moscow, last summer.

Navalny’s lawyer Vadim Kobsev tweeted that his client was ill and suffering from fever, chills and a cough. So far, it has not been possible to provide him with medication. Navalny’s supporters are convinced that the reasons the 46-year-old is repeatedly placed in solitary confinement are only used to break his will.

The opposition politician himself, who is known for his sense of humor, explained that he had overslept the New Year for the first time since childhood – because the regulations in the isolation cell stipulate bed rest from 9 p.m. “Overall I’m happy,” he added. “Other people pay money to celebrate New Year’s Eve in some unusual way – and I got that for free.

Navalny is in the prison camp under particularly harsh prison conditions for alleged fraud. Last May, a court upheld the nine-year prison sentence. Internationally, he is considered a political prisoner and the harshest critic of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.
