New Year’s Eve riots: Steinmeier: Police officers are “not whipping boys”

The Federal President invites you to the annual reception. He finds clear words about the recent riots on New Year’s Eve and demands more respect.

After the New Year’s Eve riots in Berlin and other cities, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for the rioters to be quickly brought to justice. “I would like the perpetrators to be prosecuted quickly and consistently,” he said at a New Year’s reception in Bellevue Palace. “And I expect that as a society we will be respectful of all those who take the blame for all of us, who are committed to our democracy and in our democracy.”

“Police officers and firefighters are not whipping boys for the frustrated,” Steinmeier warned, according to the published text of the speech. During the riots, police officers and firefighters were attacked, ambushed and shot at. “People in uniform became the target of an uninhibited mob – and nothing justifies this violence.”

First reception after two years of Corona break

Among the approximately 230 guests at Bellevue Palace were representatives of rescue services, the police and the fire brigade. Steinmeier had invited around 70 volunteer citizens and around 160 representatives of public life to the first New Year’s reception after a two-year break due to corona. For three and a half hours he and his wife Elke Büdenbender shook hands, wished them a happy new year and exchanged a few sentences with each guest.

Overall, this took considerably longer than planned. That is why the cabinet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) at the top did not form the end, as is usually the case, but was pushed in between at the parade. Striking: Health Minister Karl Lauterbach was the only guest to wear a mask. The SPD politician was the only member of the cabinet to do without a tie.
