After the New Year’s Eve riots in Berlin and other cities, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for the rioters to be quickly brought to justice. “I would like the perpetrators to be prosecuted quickly and consistently,” he said at a New Year’s reception in Bellevue Palace. “And I expect that as a society we will be respectful of all those who take the blame for all of us, who are committed to our democracy and in our democracy.”
“Police officers and firefighters are not whipping boys for the frustrated,” Steinmeier warned, according to the published text of the speech.
