Upper Franconia: Attack on synagogue: suspected right-wing extremist background

On New Year’s Eve, a 21-year-old is said to have tried to set fire to a former synagogue. He had previously smashed a window.

According to investigators, an attack on a former synagogue in Upper Franconia has a right-wing extremist background.

As announced by the public prosecutor’s office in Bamberg and the police headquarters in Upper Franconia, a 21-year-old suspect was arrested on January 5th. The man is suspected of having damaged a window pane of the former synagogue on New Year’s Eve. Then he is said to have tried to ignite a firecracker and throw it through the smashed window to set the former Jewish house of worship on fire.

A surveillance video and witness statements brought the investigators to the track of the 21-year-old suspect. According to their own statements, the police and prosecutors are still investigating the background to the crime. According to current knowledge and because of the execution of the crime, an anti-Semitic crime with a right-wing extremist background is assumed, it said.

Suspect on the loose again

After the young man’s arrest, the public prosecutor had applied for an arrest warrant against him. According to the information, the investigating judge of the Bamberg district court rejected this, however, because he saw no risk of flight. Therefore, the suspect is now free again. However, the prosecution appealed against the decision. Now the district court of Bamberg has to decide on the question of detention.

The two-storey building of the former synagogue dates from the 19th century and was used for Jewish services until around 1930. The building was damaged and desecrated during the National Socialist pogroms in November 1938, but not destroyed. Since a renovation in the 1990s, the former synagogue has housed a permanent exhibition about Jewish life in the region.
