The operation was delicate but a complete success. A Ukrainian military doctor had to open a soldier’s chest because it contained an unexploded fragmentation grenade.
A spectacular war operation is currently making headlines in Ukraine. Military surgeons had to remove an unexploded grenade from a soldier’s lungs, the command of the Ukrainian medical forces reports. The weapon was fired from a grenade launcher, penetrated the fighter’s chest, but did not explode.

“The operation was performed by one of the most experienced surgeons in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Major General Andrii Verba,” the post, published on Facebook, reads. And, as the army leadership emphasizes, “without the use of electrocoagulation, since the grenade could explode at any moment,” it goes on to say. The alternating current method usually involves removing or cutting up tissue.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Hanna Malyar said: “The grenade was removed in the presence of two engineers who ensured the safety of the medical staff.” The surgery was successful and the soldier is now recovering.
The “VOG grenade” is 40mm fragmentation ammunition and weighs about 275 grams.
