The evacuation of the village of Lützerath on the edge of the Rhenish lignite mining area has begun. At around 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, police officers were seen entering the hamlet grounds. They had already started dismantling barricades and massively pulled together forces in the area. The energy giant RWE wants to demolish the hamlet in order to be able to excavate the lignite beneath the village. Climate protection groups who are occupying the village are protesting against the plans. The black-green state government in North Rhine-Westphalia is behind the plans to clear the village, which has become a symbol in the dispute over phasing out fossil fuels and climate policy. The background to the eviction is a plan presented last October by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck, NRW Economics Minister Mona Neubaur and RWE boss Markus Krebber, according to which the phase-out of climate-damaging coal energy in NRW is to take place as early as 2030 and thus earlier than planned. In the short term, however, more coal is to be excavated in view of the energy crisis in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Lützerath must therefore give way in order to cover the demand.
