Justice: Iran: Execution of protester suspended

19-year-old Mohammed B. was arrested and sentenced to death – among other things, he is said to have set fire to a government building. Now he is hoping for a retrial.

The Iranian judiciary has temporarily suspended the impending execution of a demonstrator after protests. As the justice portal Misan announced, the 19-year-old’s lawyer requested a retrial before the Supreme Court.

The announcement came just days after protests by scores of people and relatives gathered outside the Gohardasht detention center in Karaj, concerned that two death sentences could be carried out imminently.

According to research by the “New York Times”, Mohammed B. is 19 years old. He was arrested in Karaj. The Iranian judiciary had sentenced him to death for allegedly setting fire to a government building and injuring a security officer. According to information from the human rights organization Amnesty International, at least 26 demonstrators in Iran are facing the death penalty. So far, Iran has executed four sentences.

Iran hanged two young men on Saturday. Mohammed-Mehdi K., 22, and Sejed-Mohammed H., 39, have been blamed for the death of a security guard during protests in November. In December, two men were sentenced to death in connection with the demonstrations critical of the system.

“master spy” sentenced to death

Iran has sentenced a former top politician to death over espionage allegations. As the justice portal Misan announced, Aliresa Akbari was exposed as one of the “most important agents for the British secret service”. The judgment of the Supreme Court is final. Iran accuses Akbari of leaking state secrets.

According to the BBC, Akbari, who also has British citizenship, was arrested in 2019. The former deputy secretary of defense rejected the allegations of espionage. He is now said to have been placed in solitary confinement, suggesting an imminent execution. The British government sided with Akbari. “We support Mr Akbari’s family and have repeatedly raised his case with the Iranian authorities,” a UK Foreign Office spokesman told the BBC.

Rumors have been circulating in the Iranian capital Tehran for days about the identity of an imprisoned politician who has been exposed as a “master spy”. According to reports, the case could also point to an internal power struggle in Tehran. As a high-ranking politician in the Defense Ministry, Akbari maintained close ties to politicians who were trying to mediate and reconcile after the recent wave of protests, the UK-based online medium amwaj.media reported.
