NGO report: Biggest blind spots in humanitarian crises in Africa

Crises and climate change have dramatic consequences for people on the African continent. But their stories get far too little attention in most media outlets, a new report shows.

According to an evaluation, the ten largest humanitarian crises of the past year that have been neglected by the media are in Africa. This is the conclusion of the report “Breaking the Silence” published today by the aid organization Care.

Accordingly, the biggest blind spot of the media public is the drought in Angola. According to the World Food Program, around 1.5 million people in the southwest of the country did not have enough to eat last year. In online media, however, it was only reported about 1,800 times. For comparison: According to the report, a good 285,000 articles were published for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing alone.

According to Care, 5.8 million online articles were evaluated for the report between January 1 and October 10, 2022. In addition to German-language articles, Arabic, English, French and Spanish texts were also analyzed. The NGO issued the report for the seventh time.

Care identified other neglected crises in Malawi, the Central African Republic, Zambia, Chad, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Mali, Cameroon and Niger. In addition to armed conflicts, the background to the crises is now mostly climate change.

As recently as 2021, the aid organization ranked Ukraine second in the list of forgotten humanitarian crises. The conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has been smoldering since 2014, has hardly received any media attention. This changed with the Russian invasion in February 2022. In the meantime, more than two million online articles have reported on the situation in Ukraine.
