War in Ukraine: New Russian rocket attacks also on Kyiv

According to the president’s office, these are the first major attacks since the turn of the year. The capital of Ukraine and other regions have been attacked again. Were the missiles launched from Belarus?

According to officials from the capital Kyiv, Russia has again fired rockets at Ukraine. The metropolis itself and other regions, including Kharkiv and Zaporizhia, were affected.

The president’s office in Kyiv called on people not to ignore the air alert and to seek protection. The sounds of explosions, which usually occur when Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense shoots down Russian missiles or drones, could be heard in the capital.

According to a report by the Internet newspaper Ukrajinska Pravda, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Juryi Ignat, said that the missiles could have been ballistic missiles coming from the north. Accordingly, the rockets could have been launched from Belarus, Russia had moved troops and technology there.

Ukraine does not have effective means of detecting and destroying ballistic missiles, Ignat said. He also explained that the air raid alarm on Saturday had started late. Many citizens were surprised by this. Ignat also said that numerous Russian long-range Tupolev Tu-95 bombers were in the air.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that parts of a rocket had crashed in an uninhabited part of the city. No one was injured, it said. According to him, an unoccupied building also caught fire and the fire was extinguished.

According to the presidential office, a residential building was also hit in the Kiev region, but there was initially no information about possible victims. The authorities in the Kiev region later spoke of a total of 18 houses hit. It was therefore the first major rocket attacks since the turn of the year, which are said to have been aimed primarily at the energy infrastructure.

Since mid-October, Russia has launched numerous large-scale attacks, primarily on objects in the Ukrainian energy system. Due to the massive destruction of the infrastructure, there are power outages in many places, affecting millions of people. The Ukrainian government accuses Russia of “terrorism” – with the aim of plunging the country into darkness and cold. Kyiv has accused Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin of wanting to force people to flee in order to destabilize the situation in the EU through mass immigration.
