Taliban: Murder of ex-MP in Afghanistan is a mystery

The murder of a former parliamentarian in Kabul is unsolved. Meanwhile, the Taliban, who rule in Afghanistan, have rebuffed a new international appeal to respect women’s rights.

A former member of the Afghan Parliament and her bodyguard have been killed under mysterious circumstances. Mursal Nabisada and her bodyguard were shot dead in the 29-year-old’s apartment in Kabul, police said. The motive is unclear. The woman’s brother was injured.

About four months ago, Nabisada spoke in a TV interview about the restrictions on women’s rights imposed by the ruling Taliban. At the weekend, they rejected international calls for respect for women’s rights.

Nabisada sat in parliament for Kabul before the militant Islamist Taliban took power in August 2021. She had told the broadcaster that she was now working for a non-governmental organization. Other politicians have since left the country. Murders of young women have increased since the Taliban came to power.

UN calls for end to oppression of women

The militant Islamists said at the weekend that the government could not allow any actions that violate the Islamic Sharia legal system. Taliban spokesman Sabiullah Mujahid called on the international community to show understanding for the religious requirements of traditional Afghan society and not to link humanitarian aid with politics. On Friday, eleven member countries of the UN Security Council called on the Taliban to immediately end all oppression of women and girls.

Since taking power, the militant Islamists in Afghanistan have massively restricted women’s rights. The Taliban have banned women from all universities. Schooling for girls was restricted by the Islamists just a few months after they took power. At the end of December, women were also banned from working for non-governmental organizations.
