According to the German Foreign Minister, Russia’s war against Ukraine is clearly a war against international law. Nothing can justify Putin’s cruel actions.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of a war against international law because of the attack on Ukraine.
“Putin is trampling on the most elementary principles of international law that unite all peoples,” criticized the Green politician on Monday before her flight to talks with representatives of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. “Russia’s war against Ukraine is also a war against justice.” With her visit, she wanted to make it clear: “International law is strong and it is up to all of us to enforce it and strengthen it right now.”
Baerbock wanted to meet the President of the International Criminal Court, Piotr Hofmanski, and then Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan in The Hague. In the afternoon, the minister wanted to give a speech at the Hague Academy for International Law entitled “Strengthening International Law in Times of Crisis”. Among other things, Baerbock studied international law, but did not complete a doctoral thesis in this area. Talks were also planned with Prime Minister Mark Rutte and her foreign minister colleague Wopke Hoekstra.
“Cluster bombs on peaceful civilians, torture prisons in dark cellars, the kidnapping of thousands of Ukrainian children – there is no justification for Russia’s cruel rampage in Ukraine, which violates international law, and the brutality of the war,” stressed Baerbock. The Hague stands for international law and justice like no other city. “The international courts there stand for the confidence that we in the world will resolve our conflicts peacefully and that the worst crimes will be punished.”
In addition to the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, the highest court of the United Nations, also has its seat in The Hague.
