“Fridays for Future” activists want to challenge the federal election

The fact that people under the age of 18 are excluded from the federal election contradicts “democratic principles”. Therefore, several young climate activists want to appeal.

Several young activists from the climate protection movement Fridays for Future want to challenge the general election. They justified this in a statement on Friday with the right to vote only from the age of 18, which restricts their democratic rights. The objection should therefore be handed over to the chairman of the Bundestag electoral review committee, Patrick Sensburg (CDU), on Wednesday.

Activists are calling for the minimum voting age to be abolished

“The exclusion of young people from the electorate cannot be brought into line with the democratic principles of popular sovereignty and general and equal suffrage,” says the 17-year-old Linus Steinmetz, who was already a complainant of the successful climate suit before the Federal Constitutional Court was involved. “The minimum voting age must therefore be abolished.” Together with Steinmetz, the 17-year-old climate activist Franziska Wessel wants to appeal for the election.

The young people are supported by the Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations, represented by the democracy researcher Wolfgang Gründinger. Unlike in some cases at the regional and municipal level, participation in the Bundestag election is only possible after reaching the age of majority. In any case, due to the demographic development, older people are much more represented in elections than younger people.
