Russia’s ex-president: Medvedev again threatens nuclear war

Western states plan to support Ukraine with more heavy weapons. Russia’s ex-president Medvedev talks about possible consequences and warns of the start of a nuclear war.

The Kremlin has criticized the discussion in the West about the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine as very dangerous. This is taking the conflict to “a qualitatively new level, which does not bode well from the point of view of global and pan-European security,” warned Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. At the same time, he restricted nuclear threats to the West made by Russia’s ex-President Dmitry Medvedev.

Medvedev threatens nuclear war

He had previously threatened the participating states with regard to the planned meeting of defense ministers at the US air force base in Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate. In Ramstein, the NATO countries planned to supply Ukraine with new heavy weapons. “It never occurs to any of these wretches to draw the next elementary conclusion: the defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war can trigger the start of a nuclear war,” Medvedev said in his Telegram channel. Nuclear powers don’t lose major conflicts, says the 57-year-old deputy to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin on Russia’s National Security Council.

Just discussing the delivery of weapons “that allow strikes against Russian territory is potentially extremely dangerous,” said Peskov. The 55-year-old said that Ukraine already had such armaments that it was using to attack Russian territory. Peskov specified that he meant the Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia, which Russia annexed in the autumn.

Moscow: No tightening of nuclear doctrine

Peskov dismissed speculation that Moscow would tighten its nuclear doctrine. The question arose after Medvedev said that the defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war could provoke a nuclear war. Nuclear power Russia has repeatedly stated that it wants to win a victory in its war in Ukraine.
