Survey: Majority of federal states against a ban on firecrackers

Böllern at the turn of the year? Many interior ministries do not want a ban – only two federal states are in favor of banning the crackers.

According to a survey, more than half of all federal states are against a general ban on firecrackers in Germany – despite the attacks on emergency services on New Year’s Eve. The nine federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saarland spoke out against it, according to a survey by the “Tagesspiegel” among the 16 interior ministries of the states.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Michael Ebling (SPD) said: “Violence against emergency services, i.e. against people who go into dangerous situations for the protection of all of us, is the very last thing and cannot be tolerated.” However, it is a problem that not only occurs on New Year’s Eve, but all year round. “A ban on firecrackers therefore does not get to the heart of the problem,” said Ebling.

Several states such as North Rhine-Westphalia have not yet taken a final position in the survey, they want to wait for the nationwide debate. “Whether the aggressive behavior towards the police, fire brigades and rescue workers can be effectively countered with a ban on the use of firecrackers and rockets on New Year’s Eve will depend on the design and the question of how broadly such a ban is supported by society,” shared, for example the Ministry of the Interior of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to the survey, only two federal states are in favor of a firecracker ban: Berlin and Bremen. The new chairwoman of the conference of interior ministers, Berlin’s interior minister Iris Spranger (SPD), had announced that she wanted to discuss this with the interior ministers.

Last New Year’s Eve there were riots in several major German cities and attacks on the police and fire brigade. The attacks in Berlin were particularly violent.
