SPD politicians on Corona: Lauterbach: “Heavy winter” with too low a vaccination rate

The government finding determines the headlines – for SPD politician Lauterbach a danger in the corona crisis. He calls for rules to be tightened. And comments on the post of Minister of Health.

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach has suggested a new federal-state round to partially tighten the corona rules.

“It would make sense that the Prime Ministers meet with the Chancellor again as soon as possible,” Lauterbach told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “There are a lot of decisions to be made in the pandemic – from the corona rules to booster vaccinations. We mustn’t lose track of the big picture during the coalition negotiations, ”he said, referring to the talks on forming a government.

The pandemic will be over in late spring 2022 if no more dangerous virus variant occurs. “But we will have a difficult winter if we do not achieve the necessary vaccination quota.” Therefore, the protective measures could not be terminated significantly.

From Lauterbach’s point of view, it is sometimes even about tightening. “We should use the 2G rule more intensively, so only give vaccinated and convalescents access to restaurants, cinemas or events,” said Lauterbach. This creates an incentive to get vaccinated after all.

“I don’t speculate about ministerial posts”

When asked whether he could imagine the office of Federal Minister of Health in a government made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP, Lauterbach said: “I don’t speculate about ministerial posts – neither publicly nor privately.” When asked, he added: “If someone is looking for who has a certain amount of experience in this area, then I would think about it.”

As a social democrat, he would set other priorities in the office. There are three major issues that need to be addressed: the shortage of nursing staff, the shortage of doctors and the reduction of bureaucracy in medicine, both outpatient and inpatient.
