Defense: SPD foreign politician praises Pistorius’ energy

Also in Ramstein no decision was made about the delivery of German battle tanks to the Ukraine. Defense Minister Pistorius was criticized. He gets support from his own party.

After the meeting of supporters for Ukraine, foreign policy expert Nils Schmid defended the new Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (both SPD) against criticism. He was pleased with the minister’s energy, said Schmid on Saturday morning on Deutschlandfunk. It is not the case that Pistorius now has to start counting tanks, but that it is a matter of putting together meaningful packages to support Ukraine in coordination with partners. And that has to be prepared.

After the conference in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, politicians from the traffic light coalition and the opposition expressed their disappointment at the further postponed decision on the delivery of German battle tanks to Ukraine. “History is looking at us, and unfortunately Germany has just failed,” said Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), chairwoman of the defense committee, on ZDF. The communication, especially from Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on this issue was a “catastrophe”, because on the one hand Germany supports Ukraine massively, but the lack of a decision on the battle tanks creates a different impression. Scholz remains guilty of explanations.

Pistorius had announced a review of the availability and number of Leopard tanks in Ramstein. The SPD politician said at the same time: “The impression that has occasionally arisen that there is a closed coalition and Germany is standing in the way – this impression is wrong.” There are good reasons for delivery, there are good reasons against. All arguments should be carefully considered. This assessment is shared by many allies. Pistorius has been in office since Thursday morning.

Schmid emphasized that a careful and prudent assessment of the escalation risks and coordination with the allies is necessary. Apparently there is still no unified opinion, “but that doesn’t mean that such a weapon delivery can’t come. Work is continuing on it.”
