The farce about US MP George Santos and his construct of lies is entering the next round. Now it turns out he was married while inviting to a gay engagement. But his friend didn’t want her at all.
There are people who like to talk nonsense. And there’s George Santos. For weeks, one statement after another by the US MP has been exposed as an often brazen lie. Now it turns out that Santos, who says he has been openly homosexual for years, was recently married to a woman. But that didn’t stop him from wanting to celebrate his engagement to his boyfriend. Although he didn’t say “yes” at all.
This emerges from research by the news portal “Daily Beast”. Accordingly, in autumn 2014, the member of the House of Representatives effusively invited via Facebook to celebrate the engagement with his then-boyfriend Pedro Vilarva. “Pedro and I have decided to put the toothbrushes together,” the post reads. “Thank you for celebrating this very important day with us.”
Engagement party without engagement
But according to Vilarvas, it didn’t come to that because the two weren’t engaged. “He asked me three times. But I didn’t take it,” he told The Daily Beast. “So there was no party or anything like that. However, there would have been a hurdle: As reporters recently discovered in the New York marriage registry, the openly gay Santos had already been married for two years at the time – albeit with one Woman.
This completely contradicts the public statements of the deputy. And it fits our picture so well. Santos has made a ton of headlines in recent weeks because new parts of his biography have turned out to be grossly exaggerated or completely made up. Santos had claimed to have attended various universities where this was not the case. He reported on his Jewish ancestors, but comes from a Catholic family in Brazil. He is even said to have lied during the election campaign about his mother’s death from cancer.
So now his marriage. During the election campaign he repeatedly emphasized his homosexuality. And a marriage was also mentioned in his internet campaign appearance. Only: There was something about a husband. According to the current state of knowledge, however, this does not seem to exist. The notice on the campaign page has since disappeared.
marriage with questions
But his confirmed marriage leaves many questions unanswered. Santos and the Brazilian Uadla Vieira, since Uadla Vieira Santos, had married in August 2012 according to the register entry. According to research by the “Daily Beast”, Uadla Vieira filed for divorce for the first time just a few months after the marriage, namely in May 2013. The application was canceled in December. So when Santos invited engagement, divorce was off the table again.
She only picked up momentum later: In September 2019, the two divorced without objection from either side. The timing was apparently no coincidence: Less than two weeks later, Santos made his candidacy for the House of Representatives official.

Just “a friend”
In his circle of friends, however, marriage was apparently not an issue before. Santos’ former roommate Yasser Rabello lived with him in a New York apartment in 2013 and 2014. He only met Vieira Santos once during that time, he told Daily Beast. She was introduced to him by Santos as “a friend”. He only found out about the marriage from the reports.
A statement from his other former roommate could explain why Santos – who emphasizes in interviews that he has been openly gay for more than a decade – was married to a woman. Gregory Morey-Parker had also shared an apartment with Santos. Santos suggested to Morey-Parker, who was also homosexual, that he should marry a woman from Brazil. “So I could help here to get citizenship.” And, according to Santos: You can earn good money with it.
