Finances: Bavaria wants to reorganize federal and state finances

The Free State paid more than half of the financial power balance between the federal states last year. That should change. A lawsuit in Karlsruhe is already in progress.

Bavaria’s Minister of Finance, Albert Füracker, has spoken out in favor of reorganizing federal and state finances. “I would like Christian Lindner to convene a new Federalism Commission this year if possible,” said the CSU politician to the newspaper “Welt”, referring to the FDP Federal Minister of Finance. The financial relationships between the federal government and the states could then be reorganized there, as could the financial balance between the states.

Füracker emphasized that Bavaria’s previously announced lawsuit against the equalization of financial power should be submitted to the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe in the first half of the year. With the lawsuit, the Free State hopes to clarify the question of how much of its income it has to give to other federal states. In addition, it should be clarified what the recipient countries are allowed to do with the money from the financial power equalization, Füracker told the newspaper. “I would be in favor of them only fulfilling compulsory tasks, but no feel-good programs such as free daycare centers or the 29-euro ticket for everyone.”

Last year, the Free State paid almost ten billion euros into the financial power balancing of the federal states – and thus again well over half. This is the result of calculations by the Bavarian Ministry of Finance. In addition to the equalization of financial power, Bavaria would also like to sue against the structure of the inheritance tax in Karlsruhe.
