Climate bonus – the least flow to Vienna and western Austria

As calculations by the APA show, the Burgenlanders will receive the most, with an average of 171 euros per capita. Behind is Krnten with 164 euros. The least amount of money goes to Viennese people from western Austrians. The people of Vorarlberg receive only 133 euros – a quarter less than the Burgenlander.Vienna. The climate bonus is to be paid out from 2022 in the amount of – depending on the classification of the municipality – 100, 133, 167 or 200 euros per person and year. Children and young people under the age of 18 should receive half.

On the basis of the population figures collected by Statistics Austria, the APA calculated how much money would have to flow into the individual federal states. Burgenland leads the way with 171 euros per capita, ahead of Krnten with 164 euros per inhabitant. Lower Austria (158), Upper Austria and Styria (each 157 euros) are just below one another.

Comparatively little money flows into the west, with Tyrol (154) and Salzburg (151) still well ahead of Vorarlberg. Because most of the Rhine Valley falls into the second-lowest bonus level, Vorarlberg residents receive an average of just 133 euros per person. As expected, there is the least amount of money for the federal capital, which is the only municipality that has the lowest bonus level across the board: 100 euros for each adult and 50 euros for children and young people result in an average of 91 euros per capita.

For the whole of Austria, the average is 142 euros per person.

The government justifies the unequal treatment of the municipalities with the fact that public transport is better developed in the cities than in the country. Accordingly, the allocation of the four bonus levels to the municipalities carried out by Statistics Austria on behalf of the government exclusively reflects the degree of urbanization and the quality of public transport in the respective municipality. Other differences – such as the fact that in large cities there is less scope for climate-friendly heating or e-cars – are not ignored.
