Fishing is the main industry of the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic. A fisheries treaty with Russia that has existed since Soviet times was recently renewed. However, given the war against Ukraine, some consider this to be morally wrong.
Haddock, herring, mackerel or salmon – freshly caught, farmed or processed: the 50,000 or so people on the Faroe Islands are economically dependent on fish. Sea creatures accounted for 93 percent of exports in 2021. So without the fish, the Faroe Islands would have a huge economic problem.
Is that why we are allowed to work with Russia? A debate has flared up about this question – far beyond the island’s capital, Tórshavn. Bone of contention: the government in Tórshavn extended a bilateral fishing agreement with Moscow by another year.
