Ukraine war: Wüst warns of overburdening with refugees

People fleeing the war in Ukraine are “warmly welcome” in NRW, says the Prime Minister. But the country is reaching its limits – and needs further help from the federal government.

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst, like other state and municipal representatives, has warned of the increasing number of refugees becoming overwhelmed. According to a newspaper report, the CDU politician demanded in a letter to Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) that the funds promised by the federal government should finally flow, further help is necessary.

Refugees from the Ukraine are “welcome in North Rhine-Westphalia,” said Wüst. “In view of the ongoing acts of war in Ukraine and the unchanged high number of refugees who seek protection from there and from other countries, I fear that states and municipalities will soon have reached the limits of their resilience and further support from the federal government need,” writes Wüst in the letter from Thursday, which is available to “Welt am Sonntag”.

Criticism of provided real estate

Real estate provided by the federal government for refugee accommodation is often in an unusable condition. According to the newspaper, the minister should influence the responsible authorities so that “actually usable capacities” can be made available.

According to research and calculations by “Bild” (Saturday), accommodation for asylum seekers in Germany is currently 64 percent (43,672 out of 67,877 places) occupied. The newspaper reports, citing statistics from the Federal Ministry of the Interior from January 2023. The rate varies in the federal states, it is lowest in Saxony at 18 percent and highest in Thuringia at 96 percent. According to “Bild”, it was 58 percent in NRW, but there was no information from Saxony-Anhalt.
