It is a “substantive debate” that must be ended, says FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr. Much more important is the “proper equipment” of the troops.
FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr has called on Boris Pistorius’ (SPD) Ministry of Defense to end debates about a possible return to conscription.
“My heartfelt request to those responsible in the Ministry of Defense is: now no insubstantial debate about a new edition of conscription, which costs time and money and would also blatantly violate military justice,” Dürr told the editorial network Germany (RND).
Naval Inspector Jan Christian Kaack had previously made it clear that he did not find the debate about a possible return to conscription unreasonable. “I believe that a nation that has to become more resilient in these times will have a better understanding if we have a mix with the soldiers,” he told the German Press Agency. “I’m firmly convinced that, given the expected demographic development, we’ll have to broaden the base of those we can apply for. It’s a fact that we used to pull 70 percent of our long-term servants out of conscription.”
FDP boss Lindner has already rejected the return to conscription
Dürr replied: “We must now concentrate on properly equipping the troops as quickly as possible. That is still taking too long for me. It would be good if the marine inspector made his contribution.” FDP leader Christian Lindner had already rejected a return to conscription and spoke of a ghost discussion.
Defense Minister Pistorius recently described the suspension of conscription by the black-yellow federal government in 2011 as a mistake – but at the same time emphasized that this could not be brought back “just like that in the twinkling of an eye”. “We have other tasks to tackle that cost a lot of money, energy and time. And they are the priority,” he said.
