The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories is tense. Five men are shot dead during an Israeli operation in a refugee camp in Jericho. Hamas announces retaliation.

Five members of the Islamist Hamas were killed in a raid by the Israeli military in Jericho in the West Bank. The aim of the operation was to arrest two militant Palestinians who fled to the city a week ago after an attempted attack on Israeli civilians, the army said. The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the death toll.

The Israeli army said the soldiers had been fired upon while deployed in the Akabat Jabr refugee camp in Jericho. They returned fire and hit several attackers.

According to the ruling Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the dead were fighters from its armed wing, the Kassam Brigades. Hamas chief Ismail Haniya announced retaliation: “If the enemy continues to kill in the West Bank, it will be a catastrophe for him.” The resistance will continue.

According to the military, two armed Hamas members came to the entrance of a restaurant in the Israeli settlement of Vered Jericho during the attempted attack about a week ago. However, jamming prevented victims. Both suspects were killed in the raid, according to Israeli security sources.

Israel’s Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised the work of the forces and said on Twitter: “A terrorist is fatal and anyone who tries to harm the citizens of Israel should know that”.
