Former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution: Maassen case: Frei expects exclusion proceedings

The former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution wants to explain himself to the CDU in writing by Thursday. Union parliamentary manager Frei is certain that there will be a party exclusion procedure against Maassen.

The parliamentary director of the Union faction in the Bundestag, Thorsten Frei, is counting on the start of a CDU party expulsion procedure against the controversial ex-Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen.

Maassen has crossed a line with his recent statements, which can no longer be justified, said the CDU politician. That is why the CDU federal executive board will decide to start an exclusion process next Monday, according to its assessment. After that, party courts would have to deal with the case.

In a tweet, Maassen had claimed that the thrust of the “driving forces in the political and media space” was “eliminatory racism against whites”. In an interview, he also spoke of a “red-green racial theory”.

On Sunday, Maassen let an ultimatum set by the CDU leadership to voluntarily leave the party expire. In this case, the CDU presidium had instructed the federal executive board to initiate an exclusion procedure and to withdraw Maassen’s membership rights with immediate effect. The next meetings of the Presidium and Federal Executive Committee of the CDU are next Monday. The CDU gave Maassen until Thursday to take a position.
