War against Ukraine: Nouripour criticizes hesitance of European partners in tanks

During his visit to Kiev, the leader of the Greens said he was “irritated” by the hesitant promises made by European partners when it came to tank deliveries. They would have pointed the finger at Germany.

Green Party leader Omid Nouripour has criticized European partner countries for hesitant commitments to supply tanks to Ukraine. “I admit that in the last few weeks and months I have been a little irritated or annoyed by some of Germany’s close friends in Europe,” Nouripour said on Deutschlandfunk on Thursday.

In view of the Russian war of aggression, these countries pointed the finger at Germany loudly and clearly in order to divert attention from their own domestic political discussions. He left open which countries the co-chairman of the Greens was referring to with his criticism.

Nouripour, who is currently in Kiev, said the Ukrainians are aware that arms deliveries cannot be taken for granted. They are grateful for Germany’s help and know “that we are on the side of Ukraine”.

After its decision to supply Leopard main battle tanks, the federal government is still waiting for further concrete participation from partner countries. While there are already announcements for the Leopard model 2A4, the supply situation for the newer type 2A6 was initially thin. Denmark and the Netherlands had agreed to participate in the delivery of refurbished Leopard 1A5s. “Now it’s important that we do something, all together,” said Nouripour.
