Climate activism: 2525 criminal charges against the last generation in Berlin

Berlin police have counted criminal charges against last-generation climate activists. The interior senator had to correct earlier statements.

The Berlin police have specified information on the criminal charges against so-called climate stickers from the Last Generation group. From January 24, 2022 to February 3 of this year, 2,525 criminal complaints were made in connection with actions by the last generation, the police press office said on Thursday.

Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) spoke on January 9 in the Interior Committee of the House of Representatives in response to a question from the CDU about “full-time gluers” of 2,700 criminal charges and 756 suspects. The police have now made it clear that these numbers also included ads against other climate activists.

With regard to the figures that have now been published, the press office further explained that the automated procedure cannot distinguish whether the criminal proceedings concern activists of the last generation of the uprising or other people. “On the basis of a rough review of the reasons for the crime being recorded, the majority of the criminal charges should concern people who can be attributed to the last generation.”

Almost 50 percent of the cases involve coercion on the road, and 25 percent involve trespassing and resistance to law enforcement officials. The other criminal charges relate to other coercion, damage to property, dangerous interventions in road traffic and dangerous interventions in rail, ship and air traffic, the police said.
