Middle East: Car drives into crowd in East Jerusalem – two dead

Recently, the security situation had worsened. In response to a raid, a suspected Palestinian assassin is said to have pulled into a bus stop. Two people are killed.

A car drove into a crowd at a bus stop near an Israeli settlement in east Jerusalem on Friday. Two people were killed, including a 6-year-old child, the Israeli police said. At least five people were injured. The alleged Palestinian assassin was therefore “neutralized”. It was initially unclear whether he was killed.

A spokesman for Gaza’s ruling Hamas said the attack in Jerusalem was “a natural response to all the occupation’s crimes against the Palestinian people.” He referred to a raid by the Israeli army in the city of Jericho in which five members of the Islamist Palestinian organization were killed.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories had recently deteriorated further. Two weeks ago on Friday, a Palestinian gunman shot dead six Israelis and a Ukrainian woman in front of a synagogue in east Jerusalem. The day before, ten Palestinians were killed in a raid by the Israeli army in the city of Jenin.
