AfD and Linke pounce on a supposed revelation about the explosion of the Nord Stream pipeline. But even a current hour in the Bundestag does not bring any new insights.
The Bundestag debated the possible background to the Nord Stream explosions on Friday. The AfD had demanded a current hour after US journalist Seymour Hersh wrote in a blog post without any evidence and citing a single anonymous source that US Navy divers were responsible for the gas pipeline explosions in the Baltic Sea last September . The Russian leadership also took up the report. The White House dismissed it as false and a fabrication.
In the Bundestag debate, the AfD and the left demanded clarification from the federal government. “The eternal silence of the federal government is the breeding ground for rumors and conspiracy theories,” said AfD co-group leader Tino Chrupalla. Left MP Sevim Dagdelen expressed similar criticism and was applauded by the AfD.
The other parties referred to the responsibility of the federal prosecutor, which is currently investigating. We have to await these investigations. As desirable as clarification is, “it is also clear that there is currently no clear knowledge of the culprit,” said FDP politician Konstantin Kuhle. Therefore, any speculation based on dubious sources would be prohibited. “You are becoming more and more radical as Moscow’s agent here in Germany,” he told the AfD.
At the end of September 2022, the Nord Stream explosions tore four leaks in the two pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 near the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. Russia had shut down Nord Stream 1 at the time due to alleged technical problems. According to information from the Kremlin, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which can still be used despite the damage, has not yet received approval from the German authorities.
The investigation into the explosions continued, Attorney General Peter Frank recently told the “Welt am Sonntag”. With the help of two research ships, water and soil samples as well as the remains of the pipelines were taken, and the crime scene was also comprehensively documented. “We are currently evaluating all of this forensically.”
