The US President is using the first anniversary of the Russian invasion as an opportunity to visit the eastern NATO members. In Poland there should be talks – and a speech.
US President Joe Biden will travel to Poland ahead of the first anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. The US President will meet Polish President Andrzej Duda during his February 20-22 visit, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Friday.
Biden will also meet with other representatives of Eastern European NATO countries. A speech by Biden is also planned with a view to February 24 – the anniversary of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The speech should be about the support of the United States and its allies for Ukraine.
In recent weeks there has been speculation that Biden could possibly combine a trip to Poland with a visit to Ukraine. When asked, the White House did not provide any information and emphasized that there were no further stops on the journey to be announced at the moment. Biden had already indicated a trip to Poland around the anniversary. Only on Thursday, however, did he declare that it was not at all certain that he would drive at all.
Various heads of state and government as well as ministers from other countries had already visited Ukraine in the past few months since the war began – some several times. Several members of the government were also there from the USA, as was Biden’s wife Jill. The US President has not yet been to Ukraine. It generally has significantly higher security requirements.
