Middle East: Eight-year-old dies after car attack in Jerusalem

The number of victims of the car attack on a bus stop in east Jerusalem is rising. An eight-year-old boy died in hospital. There is renewed violence in the West Bank.

Another child has died after a Palestinian attacked Israelis at a bus stop in east Jerusalem. The eight-year-old had succumbed to his life-threatening injuries, a spokesman for the Schaarei Zedek hospital said on Saturday evening in Jerusalem. This increased the number of victims to three.

The Palestinian from East Jerusalem drove his car into a crowd near the Ramot neighborhood on Friday. A six-year-old child – the brother of the now deceased eight-year-old – and a 20-year-old man were killed.

The assassin – a 31-year-old Palestinian – was killed, according to the police. Israeli media reported that the man from the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem was recently released from the psychiatric ward.

In the occupied West Bank, a 27-year-old Palestinian was killed in a confrontation with Israeli settlers on Saturday. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said the man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. According to the information, settlers had opened fire in the incident near the small town of Salfit.

Beware of further escalation

The Israeli army said it had received reports of violent confrontations between dozens of Palestinians and Israeli civilians. “We are aware of reports of a Palestinian who was taken to a hospital prior to the arrival of Israeli soldiers and who was killed by a gunshot wound,” the statement said. Upon arriving at the scene, soldiers fired in the air and ended the confrontations.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has been extremely tense for weeks. Nine Israelis and one Ukrainian have been killed in Palestinian attacks since the beginning of the year. Since the start of a wave of terror almost a year ago, the Israeli army has been conducting raids in the West Bank on an almost daily basis. There are always confrontations. This year alone, 45 Palestinians have been killed in clashes or their own attacks. There are also repeated reports of violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, Israeli activists or soldiers.

Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. More than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there today. The Palestinians claim the territories for an independent state of Palestine with the Arab-influenced eastern part of Jerusalem as the capital.
