Right-wing Turkish media are fueling fears of looting Syrian refugees in Turkey’s earthquake zone. The extreme right-wing militia known as the “Grey Wolves” patrol the ruins of the cities. At the same time, Syrian victims of the quake are pleading for help – and are, they say, being ignored. The atmosphere on site heats up.

Omar Hassun kneels in front of the rubble of his house. Again and again he calls the names of his children into a small gap that opens up in the rubble. “Jamal! Ahmat! Do you hear me? Jamal!” For six days now, his two sons, aged 14 and 19, have been buried in Antakya, a city in the heart of Hatay province. After so many days under the rubble, their chances of survival are close to zero.
