Former bodybuilder Ralf Moeller has been vegan for four years. At 64, he feels fitter than ever: “The gorilla and the elephant are the strongest herbivores in the world. Now the Moeller has joined them as the third animal.”
In the past six years, the number of vegans in Germany has almost doubled. According to the Allensbach market and advertising medium analysis, around 1.58 million Germans were vegan in 2022. One of them is Ralf Moeller. On the 464th episode of the podcast, “It Matters Today,” the former bodybuilder talks to host Michel Abdollahi about why and how healthy a vegan diet can be. In the interview, he shows his arm and emphasizes: “Even at the age of 64, the biceps are still there. I really feel fitter.”
The vegan gladiator – Ralf Moeller eats vegan
Ralf Moeller does not generally condemn people who consume meat and animal products. He himself has eaten a lot of meat for a long time and still treats himself to a piece of fish or an egg from time to time. But even small steps could help to live healthier and protect the environment. “If you eat something vegan once a week and eat vegan, that’s a big number for you, a big step,” he says.
With his new cookbook “Vegan Gladiators” the actor wants to make vegan nutrition more accessible for everyday life. A common accusation is that vegans lack the necessary proteins because they do not eat meat. The former bodybuilder contradicts this myth: “We all eat vegan food! We eat vegetables, lentils, peas, spinach, hummus, mushrooms and walnuts. All these things have proteins.”
Cheese, wine and co.
Warning: These foods are not (always) vegan or vegetarian – although many believe so
And he contradicts another prejudice: “Vegan is such a word that is always dismissed as just green stuff, thin and no strength,” he says. He himself feels fitter than ever. However, Mister Universum from 1986 also emphasizes that nutrition is not only important for the body, but also has an effect on general well-being. How you eat plays a major role in any diet. French fries are also vegan, but anything but healthy. Anyone who eats a vegan diet will not lose weight across the board, according to the fitness professional.
Ralf Moeller: Excessive sugar “should be punished”
People should live healthier lives again. This is a key motivation for Ralf Moeller to speak so openly about his lifestyle. In Germany, the average body mass index (BMI) for women is 26 and for men 27 kg/m². A BMI of 20-25 kg/m² is considered normal weight, and over 25 is obese, i.e. overweight. This affects global health. Two billion people worldwide are overweight. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 2.8 million people die every year as a result of diabetes, cancer or heart attacks.

“important today”
Sure, opinionated, on the 12: “today important” is not just a news podcast. We set topics and initiate debates – with attitude and sometimes uncomfortable. Host Michel Abdollahi and his team speak out for this star– and RTL reporters with the most exciting people from politics, society and entertainment. They let all voices have their say, both the quiet and the loud. Anyone who hears “important today” starts the day well informed and can have a well-founded say.
The 64-year-old athlete Ralf Moeller is annoyed about this. This is particularly dangerous for children: “Most foods contain five times the sugar. That should be punished!” The excessive consumption of meat and unhealthy convenience products is purely a matter of habit. To change this habit, he now wants to make it more palatable with his book. In general, a vegan lifestyle is becoming easier, especially in larger cities, according to Ralf Moeller: “A lot has happened in Germany. There are also great vegan restaurants in Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and Berlin where you can eat excellently.” And you can now also shop vegan at Aldi, Lidl and Co.
