Sustainable hydrogen from nuclear power? From red to green

Sustainable hydrogen from nuclear power? From red to green

Can hydrogen from nuclear power be sustainable? According to France, yes. That pleases investors – and threatens to slow down a real, sustainable energy transition.

Whenever the feeling creeps in that the majority of the countries of the European Union are on a clear course towards a climate-friendly energy transition, there is a setback. This time it’s about “green” hydrogen. The EU Commission states that this can “only be considered renewable if it is generated from electricity from renewable sources”. The nuclear power France (in alliance with Sweden) does not accept this definition. They have demanded that hydrogen produced with nuclear power should also be classified as “green” – and thus be able to benefit from all kinds of subsidies. And it would only attract investors.
