Secretary General António Guterres addresses the UN Security Council on global warming and its potential consequences. The picture he paints is bleak.
UN Secretary General António Guterres considers the limitation of global warming according to the specifications of the Paris climate agreement to be increasingly hopeless. The restriction of heating to 1.5 degrees can only be achieved in a “miraculous way”, Guterres told the UN Security Council in New York.
The head of the United Nations spoke before the most powerful UN body about the dangers of rising sea levels. The situation could get completely out of control if the temperature rises by more than two degrees. Countries like Bangladesh, China, India and the Netherlands are particularly at risk – as are almost 900 million people worldwide who live in coastal areas.
