Parties: SPD politician Mast: “Merz keeps flank open to the right”

Is Friedrich Merz fishing on the right edge? Yes, says Katja Mast from the SPD – the CDU boss uses “a lot of energy to divide our country”.

A year after the election of Friedrich Merz as the leader of the Union parliamentary group, the SPD in the Bundestag accused the CDU politician of failing to distinguish himself from the right-wing fringe. “Friedrich Merz spent a lot of energy in his first year as opposition leader in the Bundestag to divide our country,” said the parliamentary director of the SPD parliamentary group, Katja Mast, the German Press Agency in Berlin. “Friedrich Merz deliberately keeps a cross open to the right.”

On February 15, 2022, Merz was elected chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, having held this office from 2000 to 2002. Mast said: “Friedrich Merz deliberately repeatedly crossed borders and defamed groups of people.” He deliberately allowed the debates that were triggered to run. “He is not living up to his responsibility as leader of the opposition.”

The opposition leader Merz and the ruling SPD had already clashed again and again. Because of his “Pascha” statements, the CDU politician was accused by the ranks of the Social Democrats of wanting to profile the CDU at the expense of migrants. After riots on New Year’s Eve in Berlin, Merz spoke of “little pashas” whose parents forbade their sons to be reprimanded at school.

Mast said: “I have the feeling that the Union has not yet found its role.” Usually they give the fundamental opposition. She “very rarely” makes constructive suggestions.
