Crime: After Brokstedt’s knife attack: Hamburg is planning measures

The authorities had come under criticism after the deadly knife attack on a regional train – the suspect had only just been released from custody. Now the justice senator is reacting.

As a consequence of Brokstedt’s deadly knife attack, the Hamburg authorities have presented a package of measures. From now on, prisoners on remand who have been detained for a violent crime and who show aggressive behavioral problems or are addicted to drugs should be looked at in order to be able to react early to possible dangers after their release, said Justice Senator Anna Gallina (Greens) on Wednesday. The prison system, security authorities, the public prosecutor’s office and the immigration authorities should work together.

Furthermore, all indications of extremist attitudes or potential dangers of prisoners would have to be forwarded to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the state security police. All of the so-called perception sheets that have already been created, in which prison staff record their observations, are to be checked to see whether they contain unreported indications of extremism.

Ibrahim A. is said to have compared himself to Anis Amri

The 33-year-old Palestinian Ibrahim A. is said to have attacked other passengers with a knife on the regional train from Kiel to Hamburg on January 25 and killed two young people. Five other people were injured. A few days before the crime, A. had been released from custody in Hamburg. After the crime, it became known that A. is said to have compared himself to the Islamist assassin from Berlin’s Breitscheidplatz, Anis Amri, in prison in August.

Hamburg’s Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) spoke out in favor of improving cross-state cooperation in the deportation of foreign criminals. He also announced that he wanted to work for more safety on trains and at stations. Among other things, video surveillance in regional trains and in long-distance transport must become the standard. In addition, an extension of gun bans on trains and at train stations is to be examined.
