If everything goes according to plan, Sebastian Kurz will be sworn in as a member of the National Council today. On Monday he was elected club chairman by the VP club. Speculations that Kurz could not accept his mandate were rejected yesterday in the VP Club as unfounded.
A member of the government is automatically granted his mandate eight days after resignation, if he is entitled to one. You can only actively do without it. If the mandate is rejected, there is no financial safety net: Due to the right of return, the right to a six-month salary payment expires.
The VP club elected Kurz with 100 percent as club boss, but the party’s approval has long since decreased. On Wednesday, the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce President Christoph Walser, who is considered a possible candidate for governor, surprised everyone with his statements. He makes Kurz’s stay at the top of the VP dependent on the appearance of further chats. If, for example, chats become public in which governors are massively insulted, then it could be difficult, said Walser. He also criticized the “One-Man-Show”: In the past few years no more criticism had been allowed, Kurz was glorified, almost as if he were the “rebirth of God”.
The day before, Tyrol’s governor Günther Platter had described himself as “black” and not turquoise. The Styrian governor Schützenhöfer had doubted a new top candidate from Kurz. The ÖVP also sags in surveys. According to the market survey, the ÖVP would only come to 27 percent, ten percentage points less than in the election.
