As of today, there is a strict 3G proof requirement in Italy. Only those who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative are allowed to come to work. Those who cannot prove this will not receive any wages. The outcry is great.
A comprehensive obligation to provide evidence for all working people should lead to final success over Corona in Italy – but the regulation also provokes sometimes violent protests. Now all employees in the private and public sectors have to prove that they have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative. Only then are they allowed to enter their place of work – for example in offices, factories, shops, public institutions or in the service industry – with a so-called “Green Pass”.
Around 23 million employees are affected by the legislative decree. Contagions at work and collective quarantine should be avoided in this way. “For companies and employees, the Green Pass increases safety in the workplace and guarantees production,” says Maurizio Stirpe, Vice President of the employers’ organization Confindustria, the German press agency.
Without a “Green Pass” there is no wage
In some sectors, there was already an obligation to provide evidence of the Covid pass, for example in schools or in the medical sector. Prime Minister Mario Draghi is now taking responsibility for the entire world of work. Those who do not have a passport have to stay at home and no longer receive a salary in their absence.
Last Saturday, thousands of people demonstrated against the “Green Pass” in Rome, which also resulted in riots, clashes with the police and injured people.
Another demonstration is planned in the capital this Friday. Workers in Trieste in northern Italy announced that they would block the important Adriatic port. “The government must not allow itself to be blackmailed,” demands entrepreneur Stirpe.
There is a risk of chaos in freight transport because many long-distance drivers, especially from Eastern European countries, do not have a Corona certificate – also because their vaccinations, for example with Sputnik, are not recognized. Media reports said there should now be a short-term exception for precisely those foreign truck drivers. This in turn angered the Italian transport association Unatras, who spoke of an “embarrassing” process and distortion of competition.
Review: Pay to work
Politicians, especially from the right and center-right, complain about Draghi’s decree. Because corona tests for unvaccinated adults will no longer be free in the future, but cost 15 euros, they criticized the fact that you now have to pay to go to work. The Covid vaccination is free, reply members of the government.
This is exactly what Draghi is about: With the obligation to provide evidence, he wants to get those people who have so far refused to vaccinate. 85 percent of Italians over the age of twelve have been vaccinated at least once. Due to a satisfactory development, discos have been able to open again since Monday, and the rows in cinemas and theaters can be fully occupied again. The “Green Pass” is always a prerequisite for access. Companies that do not check the Covid certificate for their employees should be punished with fines of up to 1000 euros.
