Corona pandemic: RKI: Sometimes very high incidences in children and adolescents

Depending on the age and region, the corona developments in Germany are somewhat different, as the RKI weekly report shows. However, some nationwide figures are pointing upwards.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) registers a particularly high number of corona infections among children and adolescents in individual regions of Germany.

In eight districts and one urban district, the seven-day incidence is currently more than 500 among 10 to 19-year-olds, as the RKI reported on Friday. The federal authority did not provide any information on possible causes for this regional development.

Nationwide, the seven-day incidence last week in the age groups under 20 years of age fell slightly compared to the week before, according to the Corona weekly report (October 4-10). However, the school holidays began in three federal states during the week. In contrast, the values for people over 20 rose slightly.

The RKI also reported on 636 school breakouts nationwide in the past four weeks – due to possible late registrations, however, the past two weeks in particular cannot yet be assessed. It was not clear to what extent school breakouts affected the numbers in the individual counties. The districts with an incidence of more than 500 among 10- to 19-year-olds were: Prignitz, Kyffhäuserkreis, Altenburger Land, Hildburghausen, Greiz, Traunstein, Berchtesgadener Land, Straubing-Bogen and the independent city of Rosenheim. Four of the regions are in Bavaria, where the corona incidence on Friday was above 100 for the first time since May. According to the RKI, the Free State has the second highest incidence nationwide after Thuringia (120).

Children are particularly frequently tested

For some time now, numerous corona infections have been found, especially in children from school age and in adolescents. However, day-care centers and schools usually test for the virus twice a week. The Covid-19 vaccines have so far been approved for ages 12 and up. Children and adolescents are much less likely to get seriously ill with Covid-19 than older people, but there are still unanswered questions about long-term consequences.

The RKI writes that there has been a plateau in the number of cases of patients with Covid-19 in the intensive care units over the past few weeks. Around 1400 adults are currently being cared for there, and the trend is now rising slightly. The Divi Intensive Register indicates the proportion of underage people affected at 0.7 percent (as of October 15).

According to the weekly report, the incidence increases are mostly only slight in the groups over 70 years of age for which the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) now recommends a booster vaccination. There are exceptions for very old people over 90 years of age. The value rose from 39 to 48 from the previous week to last week. In older age, the immune response after vaccinations is generally lower and vaccination breakthroughs could more often lead to a more severe course, the Stiko recently wrote.

Overall, the RKI rates the infection numbers in the weekly report for October 4th to 10th as stagnating. However, developments in the individual federal states continue to differ. In a comparison of the last two weeks, Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Saarland recorded significant increases, according to the report.

However, the seven-day incidence in Germany has now risen for the third day in a row. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Friday morning as 68.7. The previous day the number was 67.0, a week ago it was 63.8.

According to the new information, 65 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours, a week ago there were 86. The number of people who died in the pandemic of or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 94,526.

The RKI has counted around 4.35 million detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

No tightening of the restrictions in sight

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Friday as 2.02 (Thursday 1.93). A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

The corona vaccination rate in Germany is increasing slowly but steadily. In Germany, 65.6 percent of the population are now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. The rate among adults is 76.2 percent. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, more than 54.5 million German citizens are fully vaccinated.

Among the children and adolescents from 12 to 17 years of age, 44 percent have now received at least one first injection, 38.2 percent are fully vaccinated.

The RKI assumes, however, that probably more people among adults are vaccinated than the data suggest. In a report at the beginning of October, for example, it said that the rate for people who were once and fully vaccinated from the age of 18 could be up to five percentage points higher.

More than 1.2 million people in Germany have already received a booster vaccination.
