A well-known climate activist has now been fined for being part of a blockade related to climate protests. That doesn’t mean her protest is over, she said later.
The co-founder and spokeswoman for the Last Generation climate protection group, Carla Hinrichs, has been fined 600 euros (20 daily rates of 30 euros each) after a road blockade in Berlin. The Tiergarten district court found the 26-year-old guilty of coercion. “It is a crime if you impose your will on others,” said judge Christoph Weyreuther in the verdict. There are legal means of protest. The public prosecutor had demanded 30 daily rates of 15 euros each (450 euros).
The defense pleaded for the Bremen native to be acquitted. Hinrichs admitted her participation in a blockade in February 2022 and said she did not consider her behavior to be punishable. After the sentencing, she said it didn’t mean her protest was over.
Meanwhile, climate activist Henning Jeschke has to reckon with criminal consequences after his sticking action in the courtroom two weeks ago. A criminal complaint had been filed, said a court spokeswoman on Thursday on the sidelines of the trial against the 23-year-old from Greifswald. According to the spokeswoman, the public prosecutor’s office has to examine which offenses could be considered. During the trial, Jeschke had glued himself to a table with one hand. The founding member of the Last Generation group is standing before the Tiergarten district court because of several roadblocks.
