WASHINGTON. America’s former Secretary of State Colin Powell died as a result of a Covid disease. According to his family, the retired general died despite being vaccinated at the age of 84.
From 2001 to 2005, under President George W. Bush, the Republican was the first African American in history to serve as Secretary of State for the United States. Powell is known, among other things, for a controversial appearance before the United Nations in 2003, where he presented alleged evidence of weapons of mass destruction, which Baghdad did not even have, to justify a US invasion of Iraq. Then the US went to war against the Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein. Two years later, in an ABC television interview, Powell regretted the speech as an “eyesore” on his career.
Prior to his time as Secretary of State, Powell was – also the first African American – US Chief of Staff.
