US Republican DeSantis and ex-President Donald Trump are considered great rivals, especially with regard to the upcoming election campaign. Now the sound gets sharper.
The prominent US Republican Ron DeSantis is now offensively tackling his internal party competitor, former US President Donald Trump. In an interview with the British journalist Piers Morgan, which was published on Tuesday evening, DeSantis considered his party colleague with various side swipes.
With a view to the investigation against Trump in New York on hush money payments to a porn actress, DeSantis teased again that he could not say anything about the “underlying behavior”. “That’s not my area of expertise.” When asked about the differences between him and Trump, DeSantis referred to his own leadership style, which “does not involve daily drama” but focuses on the big picture – and on enforcing the people’s agenda and not his own.
When asked if he could beat incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden in an election, DeSantis said, “I think so.” The 44-year-old emphasized that he was not saying that he would run in the election. All he says is that he has what it takes.
Trump and DeSantis are ahead in polls
DeSantis is expected to run as the presidential candidate in the November 2024 election. He is said to have some chances. So far he has not explained himself. Trump had officially announced several months ago that he was running for the Republican presidential nomination. In polls, the two are well ahead of the party’s other potential presidential contenders.
During election campaign appearances, Trump increasingly targets his biggest internal party competitor and calls him, among other things, “Ron DeSanctimonious” (“Sanctimonious” in German means hypocritical). Trump is known for coming up with derogatory nicknames for political opponents. So far, DeSantis has hardly commented publicly on Trump’s attacks and has otherwise been more reluctant to speak to his party colleague.
When asked what Trump’s “favorite nickname” was, DeSantis said he didn’t know how to spell “Ron DeSanctimonious” or what it meant. “But I kind of like it.” He added: “You can call me whatever you want – as long as you call me a winner.” Because that’s him in Florida. DeSantis is the governor of the southern state and was re-elected last November with a strong result.
