Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wants to ask Hungary for an explanation as to why the Hungarian parliament wants to approve Finland’s accession to NATO before Sweden’s admission to the alliance. “I will ask why they are separating Sweden from Finland. These are signals that we didn’t have before,” he says on Swedish radio. “I will definitely raise this with (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) Orban today.” Both are attending an EU summit in Brussels.
Orban’s ruling right-wing conservative Fidesz party had said parliament would ratify Finland’s NATO membership next Monday. Sweden’s inclusion in the military alliance should be decided “later”. Orban’s government says it supports both Sweden and Finland joining NATO. But she says the parliamentary majority for Sweden’s admission is too uncertain. However, Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, says there is a “serious chance” that Sweden’s bid will also be ratified by the end of the current parliamentary term on June 15.
